About Gerlachovský štít (High Tatras)
Gerlachovský štít, at 2,655 metres, is the highest peak in Slovakia, in the High Tatras, and in the entire Carpathian range. Teacher and guide Ján Still led the first recorded ascent in 1834, though surveys took until the 1860s and 1870s to confirm it, rather than the more visible Lomnický štít, as the range's true summit. Renamed Stalinov štít, or Stalin Peak, after the 1948 communist takeover, it reverted to its original name in 1959, and today its summit is reachable only with a certified guide or as a member of an alpine club.

- Its first ascent, in 1834, was led by local teacher Ján Still, guiding a small party that included his brother-in-law and two chamois hunters.
- Its neighbour Lomnický štít, lower but more visited, has a cable car all the way to its summit — Gerlachovský štít, the true high point, has none, reachable only on foot.
- Communist authorities renamed it Stalinov štít, Stalin Peak, in 1949; the original name returned in 1959.
