About Nevado del Ruiz
Nevado del Ruiz, at 5,321 metres, is a Colombian stratovolcano infamous for the Armero tragedy. On 13 November 1985, a relatively modest eruption produced enormous lahars when magma melted the mountain's ice and snow cap. Mud, ash, and water raced down river valleys at speeds exceeding 60 kilometres per hour, burying the town of Armero in Tolima within hours. Three-quarters of Armero's 28,700 inhabitants perished, making the Armero tragedy the deadliest lahar in recorded history and Colombia's worst natural disaster.
