What can you see from Aneto?
Its glacier is the largest in the Pyrenees, and could vanish within decades.
From Aneto, the terrain-limited line of sight reaches up to 320 km. The single farthest piece of visible terrain lies 320 km to the north-northeast (bearing 30°), at 1,648 m elevation. These results account for Earth's curvature and standard atmospheric refraction, computed from 30-meter resolution Copernicus GLO-30 elevation data across 2,383,466 terrain samples.

About Aneto
Aneto, at 3,404 metres, is the highest peak in the Pyrenees and in the region of Aragon, crowning the Maladeta massif on the Spanish side of the range. A young Russian traveller, Platon de Tchihatchef, led a small party of guides and hunters to the first recorded ascent on 20 July 1842, crossing a narrow rock ridge they nicknamed the Bridge of Mohammed. Its northern flank still holds the largest glacier in the Pyrenees, though the ice has lost more than half its surface area over the last century and could disappear entirely around 2050.
Did you know?
- The name Maladeta, for the massif crowned by Aneto, means 'the accursed' in the local dialect — shepherds are said to have blamed the peaks' sudden storms and glaciers on a curse.
- Aneto anchors an unofficial challenge among Pyrenean climbers: reaching all of the range's roughly 200 peaks above 3,000 metres, a project that can take a mountaineer decades.
- Aneto's glacier covered more than 200 hectares in the 19th century; by 2005 it had shrunk to under 80.
- Aneto's summit is marked by a large iron cross, the Cruz de Coronas, installed decades ago and rebuilt more than once after storms tore it down.
- From the summit ridge, the peaks of the central and western Pyrenees stretch away in an almost unbroken line.
Frequently asked questions
How far can you see from Aneto?
On a clear day the terrain allows a line of sight of up to 320 km from Aneto. The average visible distance across all 360 directions is 156 km. Atmospheric conditions (haze, humidity) usually reduce practical visibility below the terrain-limited maximum.
What is the farthest point visible from Aneto?
The farthest terrain visible from Aneto lies 320 km to the north-northeast, at an elevation of 1,648 m. Earth's curvature and atmospheric refraction are accounted for in this calculation.
How high is Aneto?
The observation point at Aneto sits at 3,375 m above sea level (Copernicus GLO-30 elevation model).
How is this visibility map calculated?
UpToWhere traces lines of sight in 360 directions from the observer using 30 m-resolution Copernicus terrain data, correcting for Earth curvature and standard atmospheric refraction. You can run the same analysis for any point on Earth with the free calculator.
