About Mount Bromo
Mount Bromo rises 2,329 metres in Java's Tengger mountains and stands in a protected nature reserve called the 'Sea of Sand' (Segara Wedi). The cone is the youngest and most active volcano within the larger Tengger caldera complex. The name derives from Brahma, the Hindu god of creation—local Hindus make sacred pilgrimages here. Since 1900, Bromo has erupted 34 times across 34 years, producing mild Strombolian to Vulcanian explosions with ash plumes typically under 5 kilometres. Currently at alert level 2, the volcano hosts white gas-steam plumes rising 100–500 metres daily.
