On 2 August 2027 the Moon’s shadow makes landfall at the Strait of Gibraltar and runs the length of North Africa to the Red Sea and beyond. Southern Spain gets up to four and a half minutes of totality; over Upper Egypt, near Luxor, it stretches past six, the longest over land this century.     What the colours mean

    Inside the two lines the Sun goes completely dark, and the shading is how long that lasts: pale near the edges, deep toward the centre. Outside the lines it never goes dark at all, however close you are, so the second layer shows how much of the Sun gets covered there instead. A third layer gives the historical odds of a clear sky at each point’s own eclipse hour, from twenty years of ERA5 reanalysis.

    Where the numbers come from

    Every figure is computed from this eclipse’s Besselian elements, published by NASA/GSFC, rather than read off someone else’s map. Duration is checked against independently published values for Cádiz, Tarifa, Ceuta and Luxor before the page is allowed to build.

    One shadow, four clocks

    Morocco is on UTC+0 that morning and Spain on UTC+2: Tarifa and Tangier are 14 km apart and read the same shadow two hours apart. Algeria and Tunisia are on UTC+1, Libya on UTC+2, and Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Yemen on UTC+3, so the same eclipse runs from mid-morning clocks at the Strait to after-lunch clocks on the Red Sea.     How long will the 2027 eclipse last where I am?

Along the Strait of Gibraltar it runs to roughly four and a half minutes; along the Nile in Upper Egypt it passes six; on the northern edge of the path, near Málaga, it drops under two. Outside the path it is zero, no matter how close you get, and the map shows the covered fraction of the Sun instead.

    Where is the 2027 eclipse longest?

    Over Upper Egypt. The point of greatest eclipse falls near the Nile between Sohag and Luxor: around Girga totality lasts about 6m23s, and Luxor itself gets about 6m21s, the longest totality over land anywhere this century. That stretch also has the most dependable sky on the whole path: at eclipse hour in early August it has been clear on 96 to 97 percent of days across twenty years of ERA5 records. Mecca and Jeddah are inside the band too, at about 5m08s and 5m59s.

    Where in Spain is the eclipse longest?

    Ceuta, at about 4m48s, is the longest in Spanish territory. On the mainland the best is the far south of Cádiz province: Tarifa gets about 4m39s and Algeciras and Gibraltar about 4m27s. The centre line does not cross mainland Spain at all: it runs over the Strait and into Morocco, so going south along the coast buys far more time than going west. Cádiz city, well north of the centre, gets only about 2m54s.

    Is this the same eclipse horizon checker as before?

    Yes, the same tool and the same URL, updated for the next eclipse. The 2026 version answered whether terrain would block a Sun that was only a few degrees above the horizon. In 2027 the Sun is high everywhere on the path, from 37 degrees over Cádiz to 82 over Luxor, so a ridge would have to rise around 840 metres per kilometre to matter and terrain is no longer the question.     Is this a cloud forecast?

    No forecast exists a year out, but the map carries the next best thing: a clear-sky layer built from twenty years of ERA5 reanalysis at each point’s own eclipse hour. It shows what experienced eclipse chasers already plan around. Upper Egypt and the Red Sea coast have been clear on more than 95 percent of early-August days, coastal Tunisia and Libya above 90, inland Andalusia around 80 with the Atlantic coast cloudier, and the Yemen highlands sit in their summer monsoon, where a clear eclipse hour has been the rare exception. Saharan dust is the one spoiler no cloud statistic can see. Use the odds to choose a region, then a real forecast in the last week to pick the spot.
