The numbers are computed from the eclipse’s Besselian elements published by NASA/GSFC, not copied from another map, and the build refuses to publish if they drift from independently published values for Cádiz, Tarifa, Ceuta and Luxor.
The story most coverage gets wrong
The centre line of this eclipse does not cross mainland Spain. It runs over the Strait of Gibraltar and into northern Morocco, which puts the whole Spanish mainland on the northern half of the path. So the usual advice to head for a famous city is wrong here: Cádiz gets under three minutes, while Tarifa, 100 km south, gets nearly four and three quarters. The longest totality in Spanish territory is in Ceuta, in North Africa.
The second thing worth a paragraph: Tarifa and Tangier are 14 km apart and see the same shadow within half a minute of each other, but Spain is on UTC+2 that day and Morocco on UTC+0, so the local clocks read two hours apart. Morocco moved to permanent GMT in 2026. The path goes on to cross UTC+1 in Algeria and Tunisia, UTC+2 again in Libya, and UTC+3 in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Yemen: one shadow, four clocks, and any timetable that assumes one country’s time for its neighbour is an hour or two wrong.
And the biggest number of all is not in Europe. The point of greatest eclipse sits over Upper Egypt, where totality reaches 6m23s near Girga, with Luxor just behind at 6m21s, under a sky that twenty years of ERA5 reanalysis show clear at eclipse hour on 96 to 97 percent of early-August days. Mecca and Jeddah are inside the band too. The honest counterexample is Yemen: Sanaa is in the band, but August is its monsoon, and in those same twenty years a clear eclipse hour there has been the rare exception.
